I’ve been greatly enjoying learning more about Windows Server technology from the Early Experts website. They have some great material to help you prepare for certification, or simply to learn more about Windows Server technology. I’ve been working my way through the Apprentice Quest, and steps 2 and 3 in the quest require you to download Windows Server 2012 R2 in a VHD format. I downloaded the file, though I did so over 2 days (pausing the download so I could put my laptop to sleep and go to sleep myself and then resuming in the morning).

When I went to mount the VHD file (right click on the file and select mount), it popped up with the following message:

“Sorry, there was a problem mounting the file”. Really? Classic Microsoft. Thank you for the completely obvious and worthless error message. Given Microsoft’s usual level of helpfulness, I naturally avoid Bing and go straight to Google for an answer. After seeing almost nothing helpful, I find the most bizarre answer…

[callout] Simply COPY, not cut and paste, the VHD file from one location to another and you’ll find that you can mount it.[/callout]

For reasons completely unknown, this clears the error condition and the file can be mounted, and in my case, booted from. That’s it!

Wow, I spent an hour on other blogs looking fir the fix. This one did it for me. After downloading (in my case, Visio or Project), go to the download location, copy the file, then paste elsewhere (I pasted to the Desktop). The file could then be mounted. Thanks!

Copy paste didn’t work for me.. same issue.. I had to go to Disk Manager and attach a VHD file and then assign drive letter.. Worked a treat thank God!

I’m getting the same problem. It has NOTHING to do with remote/local/up your ass. It’s a problem with this BULLSHIT that they’re calling an OS these days.

I found a simple fix. Right click on the image and choose open with «Choose default program..» Then select «Windows Explorer».

It appears that the default application associated with the image causes the mount option to fail.

What to do to fix this?

It turned out that the original ISO file was marked as sparse. This flag gets removed when the file is copied.

You can check if this flag is set with the command

I don’t know if this is a bug or it is by design. Let me know if my workaround works for you. Worked for me after running Windows Updates.

You won’t be able to mount it if it is sitting on a network drive. i.e. T:\ISO\

It’s hilarious that everybody uses NASs now that they have been pushed into the market over the last couple of years, but the most recent Windows version fails to implement a mounting feature that most other OSs have had a like time ago (like Mac OS) correctly.

It would be good if Microsoft could give a statement as to whether this will be addressed or what the causes are. Is there a way to escalate this issue to the Microsoft Windows development team, or to know if they are aware of it?
