Sport or Sports?

This week, we answer a question from a listener in China, who asks:
Question: What is the difference between sports and sport? VOA Fan, China
Answer:
That is an interesting question. I’m sure you know that “sports” can be the plural form of the word “sport.” You may not know that we can use the word as a verb or adjective. More on that later.
British and American English
The simple answer is that in the United States, we use the noun “sport” to talk about any contest or game that involves physical activity. When we talk about “sports” we mean the plural form of the noun. That is how we talk about basketball, football and baseball as a group.
But if you are in Britain, or you speak British English, you would use the noun “sport” to talk about the same group of activities. I looked at the BBC News website and their top menu shows “Sport” for the news about Football, Cricket, Tennis, Golf and so on.
Let’s look at some examples. My son is a computer programmer. He says:
I am not interested in sports.
A British person who shares my son’s opinion would say,
I am not interested in sport.
When getting to know someone new, a British person may ask:
Do you do any sport?
That does not sound right to my American ears. I would ask,
Do you play any sports?
Other ways to use ‘sport’
You can also use the adjective “sport” to describe something. If you do not make money by fishing, that it, you only fish for fun, you are a “sport fisherman.”
As a verb, “sport” means to wear something. It is mostly used when someone is wearing something that is attention-getting.
He is sporting a bright blue jacket in the photo.

Sport Or Sports?
which of the following is correct?
A. Baseball is a kind of sport.
B. Baseball is a kind of sports.
More likely in my opinion is just Baseball is a sport.
A. Baseball is a kind of sport. OK
or
Baseball is a sport.
or
B. Baseball is a kind of sports. No
the word sports is usually used in front of a noun, eg a sports centre, sports equipment, sports injuries, etc.
You can express your idea either as
Baseball is a kind of sport,
where sport is uncountable,or
Baseball is a sport,
in which a sport means ‘a particular type of sport’.
Respectfully, Gleb Chebrikoff
The use of one or the other is regional.
In the US, sport is used for a single distinct sporting activity, while sports refers to general sporting activities.
My favorite sport is baseball.
I really like sports.
In British English (and apparently places with direct British influence on the language) sport is used for general sporting activities. For instance, a British newspaper has a Sport section, while US newspapers have a Sports section. Note the difference in the sections menu at http://www.guardiannews.com / when you change between the US and UK editions (top left).
In the US, sports is more commonly used as the adjective:
sports event, sports facility, sports medicine, sports team (even though the team only plays one sport)
Apparently the British phrase these with sport instead of sports.
An American distinction:
would be used for a night of playing or watching or talking about sporting games.
So, to answer the question, in the US most would say
A crow is a kind of bird.
Maple is a kind of tree.
Dancing is a type of performing arts.
The study of grammar is a kind of academics.
