Spectral Shield Throw
Spectral Shield Throw is an attack skill. The user tosses their shield at an enemy. On impact, it deals physical damage to the enemy and releases shards that deals damage to nearby enemies. Unlike most attack skills, Spectral Shield Throw uses your shield’s stats to calculate damage.
Skill functions and interactions
Projectile Modifiers: The initial projectile from Spectral Shield Throw can be modified to chain and fork, but not to have additional projectiles or pierce. Support gems that add these effects will have their appropriate damage modifiers applied to all part of Spectral Shield Throw’s damage.
Fork: Fork splits the initial shield throw into two projectiles, which can then each individually chain or hit. Secondary projectiles (Shards) pierce by default and therefor are unmodifiable in functionality.
Shards: The shield will only explode into shards after it is done forking and chaining. The shards can pierce.
Projectile Speed: Increased projectile speed will increase the velocity of the initial shield throw. Similarly to Ethereal Knives, the distance the shards travel is affected by projectile speed.
Increased Defences from Equipped Shield Passives: Despite raising the Defences of the equipped shield when taking passives of this nature, these passives do not raise the intrinsic values present on your shield and thus do NOT increase the damage of Spectral Shield Throw.
Totems: Spectral Shield Throw cannot be supported by Ballista Totem Support.
Attack Speed Modifiers: May not be acting as intended, with many modifiers not applying at 100% of their value.
Unarmed: Facebreaker and Doryani’s Fist provide no damage bonus to Spectral Shield Throw.
Wands: Can be used with a wand, as long as there is a shield in the offhand.
Gloves: Sinistral Gloves increase damage with offhand, which includes shield offhand damage
Overview
Spectral shield Throw is one of the least used skill gems in path of exile and there are a lot of good reasons why, to name a few: It has terrible mechanics regarding how the Skill both works and scale. Awful base attack speed combined with it also being hard to scale properly. But with the new changes in [3.6]
«Base Off Hand Attack Time is now 0.65 seconds at gem level 1 (from 0.7 seconds) and 0.56 seconds at gem level 20 (from 0.61 seconds). Base projectile speed is now slightly faster.»
The attack speed issue is slightly fixed I guess? It is a shame that the skill has all these problems when it is awsome in concept. The idea of throwing your shield to deal damage is pretty cool by it self and the animations ingame are also pretty to look at. So i am devoting my first time in Synthesis to making the best out of the worst. I have manage to create a skill tree which can probably take me through the entire gave and even tackle the endgame contet with out any bigger issues.
Build Idea
One of the few good things with spectral shield throw is that it get’s an absurd amount of flat physical damage based on the shields Armour/Evasion. So it is kinda easy to get a huge number pretty fast at league start now with the new Crafting system and th easy to obtain increased Quality percentages. Then we convert all the flat physical damage to Elemental damage of diffrent sorts using Uniques and Nodes in the Tree, since it is alot easier to scale the damage after it is converted. At the same time im going to use Added #% of physical as Extra elemental damage which also scales pretty good. I am also going to utilize the deadeye ascendancy and the ricochet node to the fullest by getting chain on 2 items and using the support gem now that it also is receiving a rather big buff.
«Chain support now causes supported skills to deal 30% less damage at gem level 1 (from 50%), up to 11% less damage at gem level 20 (from 31%).»
With the ascendancy node ricochet, items and the support gem I get 4x chain, ricochet also gives 10% more damage for each remaining chain on the projectile. which means that we get a 40% more damage multiplier on the first target the shield hits. It is a pretty big damage buff to single target.
Conversion
I get 40% physical damage to cold conversion from the tree nodes, and the we use the unique gloves. Hrimsorrow or the upgraded version Hrimburn to convert another 50% to cold damage. Together with the League and patch [3.6] we might be able to convert the remaining 10% with gear aswell using the new implicit crafting using fractured items.
Chaining (and maybe fork?)
As mentioned earlier I am going to utilize the ricochet ascendancy node as a Deadeye and by that get +1 Chain and another 10% more damage on the intial hit before the chain starts. After the ascendancy node I am starting to stack chain by the form of Uniques and the support gem. I am also considering using the Fork support for mapclearing since it would greatly increase the spread potential of the shards. And the fact that it also got a buff in the patch notes makes me want to try it out.
«Fork support now causes supported skills to deal 10% less damage at gem level 1 (from 30%), up to 9% more damage at gem level 20 (from 11% less)»
Shields
The best possible shield you could get damage wise is a Colossal Tower shield rare item. And then you would want to craft it with such high armour numbers as possible. A reminder: the quality of the shield also increases the armour it has. For early end game i can recommend A unique shield called Lioneye’s Remorse it has high enough Damage output to take you along way while you gather resources to craft or potentially buy a better Rare shield.
Leveling
In the tree I provide with the POB link, im starting of with shield nodes and basic attackspeed which means that in the extreme early game that you could use melee skills such as frostblades or Sunder. At around level 30 I get the Point blank Key node and start to using Spectral shield throw. And when leveling I want to be as close to the enemies as I can be since point blank provides more damage the closer the target is. At around the same time I am going to spend points into conversion via the tree and start using elemental scaleing, with abit of luck I am going to get a pair of Hrimsorrows pretty early. I have included a step-by-step guide in the POB on how to progress the tree.
ascendancy progression (changed from POB)
1. Gathering Winds
To help with leveling by adding attack speed and movement speed!
2. Fast and Deadly
10% attack speed and alot of accuracy! and at the same time a huge damageboost early game.
3. Far Shot
Just to progress towards ricochet, and the distance damage increase can help you with some early map bosses.
4. Ricochet
a HUGE damage increase to single target but you are not going to notice any huge diffrences when it comes to normal mobs.

Going to update my progress with the character at league start, stay safe exile!
Ultimatum League Starter: Spectral Shield Throw Gladiator
With Ultimatum just around the corner I’ve been wondering, what should I start with? I feel like having a change from the traditional summoner and mine builds that are typically favoured on league start, that’s why I’ve decided to start with a Spectral Shield Throw, max block gladiator.
Since Ultimatum is all about surviving, I’m looking to start the league with a tanky, smooth character that I can easily gear and take into the late game to farm for my next build – Gladiator is the obvious choice due to the overwhelming block chance you get, but I didn’t feel like playing the normal skills like Lacerate, so I’m giving Spectral Shield Throw a chance.
What does Spectral Shield Throw do?
Spectral Shield Throw is a projectile attack skill that scales off of the amount of armour that your shield has, the higher the armour, the more added physical damage. When you throw your spectral shield it will hit a unit and then shatter into smaller shards, the shield itself cannot pierce or chain, however, the shards can. Typically it’s hard to scale SST damage so it’s not very popular, but it can be great for league starting as it scales well with minimal investment.
Video Build Guide
Here is my overview of the build items, skill tree and gem links leading up to 3.14:
Path of Building
Here are two Path of Buildings, one is for a completely fresh league start with no Cluster Jewel’s and one has Cluster Jewel’s.
Note: 3.14 Introduced “Veteran Soldier” which is a great addition for the build, it provides 10% Physical Damage over Time Multiplier, +20 Maximum Life & 20% Increased Physical Damage, all are great for this build so it’s worth taking it.
Path of Building No Clusters: https://pastebin.com/J08ujrSA
Path of Building w/ Cluster Jewels: https://pastebin.com/8uguUV28
The Gear
Gearing for this build is super cheap to get going, the build is not extremely popular so any items specifically used only for this build can be obtained for peanuts, end-game gears may need to be self-crafted so could cost a bit.
Body Armour
Helmet
Early: Any rare, armour based helmet with maximum life, int or dex and resistances
End-Game: Rare ilvl 85 elder base helmet with “Nearby enemies take 9% more physical damage” modifier and life
Gloves
Early: Rare gloves with life, int or dex and resistances
Endgame: Hunter/Warlord Influenced Sinsitral Gloves with Physical Damage over time Multiplier and Culling Strike and added physical damage (if possible)
Boots
Early: Any boots with life, movement speed and resistances
End-game: Hunter Two-Toned boots with Projectiles Pierce 2 Additional Targets, Bleeding you Inflict Deals Damage #% Faster, life and movement speed
Rings
Early: Any rings with life and resistances, int or dex is also very nice
Upgrade: Steel rings with added phys and life/resists.
End-Game: Steel Rings with Redeemer influence, life, added phys to attacks, increased projectile attack damage and some resist
Amulet
Early: Citrine, Onyx or Turqoise amulet with life, added phys and resistances
Upgrade: Impresence (100% vulnerability reduced mana reserved when cast as an aura)
Belt
Early: Any belt with life, resists
Upgrade: Stygian Vise with good life and resists
End-game: Hunter stygian vise with maximum life, increased maximum life and resists
Weapons
Advancing Fortress OR twilight prismatic eclipse with 3 green sockets (whatever you prefer)
Shield
Early: Any high armour shield
Early Unique: Titicus Span
Upgrade: Colossal Tower Shield with Defeaning Essence of Envy for good armour
End-Game: Shaped Colossal Tower Shield with high armour roll and “Recover %# of life when you block” modifier
Jewels
You’re going to want to pick up a “Divide and Conquer” jewel ASAP, after that any abyss jewels with flat Phys and maximum life are good, normal jewels with “#% to Physical Damage over Time” and “#% Increased Maximum Life” modifiers are perfect too.
Once you’re into the endgame you can consider buying or farming a Malevolence watchers eye, the modifiers you’re looking for are:
Any other Malevolence modifiers with those is a bonus, of course, the damage over time multiplier is the best possible modifier.
Gem Links
Body Armour (In order of importance, until you get a 6 link): Spectral Shield Throw – Brutality Support – Vicious Projectiles – Deadly Ailments – Swift Affliction – Unbound Ailments
Weapon: Shield Charge or Whirling Blades with Culling Strike and Faster attacks support
Shield: Reckoning – Life Gain on Hit – Pulverise
Boots: Cast When Damage Taken – Vaal Molten Shell & Vulnerability – Blasphemy Support, link them
together separately as two links each.
Gloves: Enduring Cry – Second Wind Support – Dash – Blood Rage
Helmet: Enlighten – Flesh & Stone (if you’re not using Fenumus’) – Malevolence – War Banner
If you’re using Fenumus’ you can socket your auras into your shield drop flesh & stone so you can reserve Aspect of the Spider and can instead place the Reckoning setup into the helmet with Increased Area of Effect support.
Ascendancy, Pantheon & Bandits
For the bandits we’re going to kill all for the 2 points.
Pantheons: I personally prefer Soul of Arakaali and Soul of Shakari for the reduced damage against damage over time, you can change yours as you see fit, more Phys reduction in mapping can be good vs high crit roll modifiers.
Welcome to my Spectral Shield Throw Bleed Gladiator Guide.
I played alot of minion builds in the past before 3.8 and it was really strong but needed some understanding. I was really happy when they announced the simplification and buffs of those builds. But they broke it and now we have > 40% Necromancer and im tired of it.
Spectral Shield Throw (SST) was always on my list as a really nice looking and funny skill. It received attention as some streamers played it last season with the Deadeye cold conversion variant. But vanished really fast again.
I wanted to do something else. And here it is. Bleed Explosions SST Gladiator with max Block.
I enjoy the build so much that i decided to write my first guide ever for it.
Pros & Cons:
personally the last point is a big + for me. you have to play actively and aim with your shields. this is really fun. if you just want to click in the middle of nowhere and your tornado shot still kills everything or you want to afk blights with minions this build is the complete opposite and maybe not for you.
I killed all content with it. Guardians / Shaper are really easy. Über Elder needs some dodging. But also not that hard. I even did some delves at 590 depth deathless. Currently grinding my way to level 99. Conquerors and progressing the atlas is no problem. I did awakaner 8 deathless multiple times.
Changelog:
Gem Links:
Main Link:
5 Link
Cruelty Support
6 Link
Lifetap Support or Swift Afflication Support (only for Blood Magic)
Most support gems have affordable Awakened versions.
Aura Setup:
Pride or Malevolence: 50%
Pride has the potential to do more damage and also affects our initial hit. With Malevolence you can outrange enemies and its always up. Malevolence also has a nice Watcher’s Eye mods to scale our bleed further.
War Banner: 10%
Pretty good for just 10%. Adds another Physical Damage Multiplier. It also helps our single target as you can just place it on the boss for a big boost.
Herald of Purity or Aspect of the Spider: 25%
More Physical Damage and some cool looking dudes
or
a stacking dps + slow debuff (Mandatory for Fenumus Gloves)
Utility:
Blood Rage:
Leech, Frenzy Generation, Attack Speed. Mandatory.
Dash:
Just to get over Gaps.
Enduring Cry:
Good regen, Endurance charges, Just use on autocast with Call to Arms Keystone.
Keep in mind that your Shield charge does a lot of damage as it also scales with your shield. In lower tier maps or just to have some fun you can easily shield charge packs to death.
(Vaal) Molten Shell :
With the granite flask i have over 35k armour, which gives some huge boosts. You can use the normal version as additional life and the vaal one as «oh shit» button. You can also link it to Cast when damage taken.
Flexible Setups:
Tempest Shield:
Gives 3% Block and you have some open gem slots. Also gives a free shield mtx
Precision:
I use it to boost my Accuracy a bit and for my watcher’s Eye. Just adjust the level to your mana needs. Only run if you don’t play RT and have a related watcher’s mod.
Items:
Weapon:
There aren’t a lot of good Statsticks for physical SST.
For a cheap and strong weapon i choose Advancing Fortress
15% Block Chance, free Fortify and some defense are quite good.
Alternatives:
Prismatic Eclipse with 3 green Socket for 36% attack speed buff, as it’s a global modifier. You can also corrupt it for RT.
Runic Hatchet with Warlord Influence. Go for double bleed mods. I also like trigger craft so you can’t forget your tempest shield / blood rage and put vulnerabilty on it if you don’t have a another source.
Keep in mind that most buffs on weapons are local modifiers, so won’t affect your SST.
Shield:
Colossal Tower Shield with as much armour as possible.
You can buy a ilvl86 for some chaos. Just throw some dense Fossil on it and you should be able to get one with 2k+ armour. This should be enough for nearly all content.
In 3.10 you can also use Defeaning Essence of Dread. They are now really cheap and always have a > 400 armour roll.
With Harvest you can go for a Shaper / Warlord base and craft without affecting your big armour prefixes. Life gain on block is just crazy.
Influenced Astral Plate
Always a good pick for any build.
Life, Res, Influence modifiers of your choice. I got Redeemer for Frenzy on Bosses and crafted Block for reaching the cap.
Amulet:
Impresence
Good life, Armour, Physical Damage and Vulnerablity aura. Presence aura also looks nice in my opinion.
Alternative:
Rare with Physical damage, life, Resist.
With Elder or Hunter you get access to «Physical Damage over Time Multiplier»
Annoint:
Cleaving / Growth and Decay / Crystal Skin / +30 Intelligence / Ambidexterity
Warlord influence for another possible source of vulnerability.
Belt:
Stygian with Life, Resist
Gloves:
Fenumus Weave
Aspect of the Spider, Attack Speed, Additional Damage for Bleeds
Rare Apothecarys Gloves with Life, Attack Speed, Resist.
Hunter influence can give you «Physical Damage over Time Multiplier»
Boots:
Armour based boots with Life, Resist, Movement speed
Hunter influence can give you pierce.
Helm:
Armour based with Life and 9% Physical damage.
You need an Elder ILvl85 Base for the mod since and it’s not that easy to roll.
A good alternative and cheap helm which is always available with a lot of lab enchants is Crown of the Inward Eye
Rare Jewels:
Look out for
— Maximum Life
— Damage over Time
— Damage with Bleeding
— Physical Damage
— Attack Speed (while holding a Shield)
Bubbling/Seething Divine Life Flask of Staunching
Instant heal flask as in most of life builds with bleed removal.
Alchemist’s Quicksilver Flask of Adrenaline
Going fast
Experimenter’s Granite Flask of Iron Skin
The Iron Skin suffix boosts our armour by a ton. Great flask for Molten shell
Perpetual Silver Flask of Warding
We don’t have a source of Onslaught so we go with this one.
Ample Quartz Flask of Heat
I love Phasing and some extra Defense is welcome. You can swap this flask for something you like.
I choose the Warding and Heat Suffix for my last 2 Flasks. For me thats the most important ones. Prefix are changeable.
Cluster jewels:
12% increased Attack Damage with shields can be used as well. Here you have Notables like Gladiator’s Fortitude
Medium:
+5% to Physical Damage over Time Multiplier
Notables like Exposure Therapy, Rend, Vivid Hues
Small:
— 1% Chance to Block Attack Damage
can fix some missing block
— 4% increased maximum Life
can’t go wrong with that one. Just go full life e.g. with Fettle or use some hybrid notable like Gladiator’s Fortitude
Ascendancy / Bandits:
Pantheon:
Major:
I often take Lunaris on my characters for some extra movement / defense in most situations.
Arakaali is strong on this character, as Damage Over Time is a weak point and i run no Grounding Flask
Switch to Solaris if your doing crit map / delve
Brine King is not useful as Stuns are no issue.
Minor:
Just use one regarding the encounter you do.
Leveling:
With some gear leveling as SST is really fast.
You can just use the common leveling items such as:
— Tabula Rasa
— Blackheart Rings
— Lochtonial Gloves
— Goldrim Helmet
— Wanderlust Boots
For Leveling i would prefer Splitting / Shattering Steel until 30.
Titucius Span will easily carry you to Blood Aqueduct.
Good starter weapons are Princess or Ewar’s Mirage.
At level 70 swap for Lioneye’s Remorse and go for maps.
Not sure about leveling with this character for league start. You could try Shield Crush. Lycosidae / Kaltenhalt are good early game shields.
Insights:
Playstyle:
Use Shield charge for movement and to keep Fortify up. You can easily charge into the middle of big packs. Your shield charge does a good amount of damage and your tanky enough to take some hits. Keep in mind that for most packs 1-2 SST is enough. It just takes a second for the bleed to do his work. But don’t worry as i started with this build i was also throwing way too many shields at each pack. For bosses or dangerous mobs use your Vaal Molten Shell and War Banner.
My gear:
I linked most of my gear in the item section. Also my profile is public and you can just click on my account. Character: paLeDuelistBlight
In my first version i had an accuracy roll on gear + a watchers’eye precision mod so i did about the same damage without RT but saved some nodes.
RT is most likely the easier way. The current pob also uses RT.
Precision is already in the list of «Flexible Setups:» which you can choose for yourself. So just drop it.
2)
Why should i run maim. Gladiator «Blood in the Eyes» already gives Maim.
Maim support isn’t run for Maim itself, which is a 30% slow.
It’s run for the middle line of the gem.
Enemies Maimed by Supported Skills take (10-14)% increased Physical Damage
This is an additional multiplier for our damage.
Tree and Videos:
I made a Path of Building file with multiple Trees.
Early / Mid / Late / Late with Cluster
https://pastebin.com/A3RnfEyP
I also made a T15 Toxic Sewer video to give a quick showcase of the build.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N80uwaimHRM
Videos are a bit laggy for my PC. But if you have some request i can try.
Patch notes:
As this is my first build guide, please let me know if you think something important is missing. I’m also available for feedback and questions via Forum / Ingame.
I will try to update the build for new patches or changes
I hope you enjoy playing SST with bleed explosions.
I’m leveling and following your build right now. What flasks do you recommend? I love how quick and concise your build is on here. The usage of spoilers is great as well. The leveling section was very helpful too. For a first build, this is great. Can’t wait to see how this build goes late game. Thank you for sharing.
*edit* Oh also, I love love love love it when people do the leveling trees in Path of Building. Thank you. princessmisery

Thanks for your positive Feedback.
I’m really happy that you give this build a try. I hope you will enjoy it.
Also i added this text for the Flasks to the Item Section:

Can confirm, this is a fun build.
I’m an altoholic, and i’ve been finding this one fun enough to stick around for a while with.
Thank you for the build!
Great you like the build 🙂
I finished 99 this week and will take some time off now, but will follow the thread regardless and answer any upcoming questions.
I will update the build for 3.9 if needed as soon as any changes are public.
I found levelling with this build quite quick and easy, especially once you get your SST up and runing with the gem so if you can get the gem and the two suggested shields early in league I think this might even be a good league starter.
I found it reliably tanky and had no deaths during levelling or doing any of the labs (Short of trap fails on my part).
I would however like your opinion on best Major and Minor Pantheon if that’s not too much trouble.
Thanks again, this build has been one of the more fun I’ve played so far.
Yes with buying the shields leveling is pretty fast.
I will do an SSF session before this league ends and try to evaluate some league starter tips and what’s the best way without leveling gear.
Pantheons are no big thing. I added this section in my starter post anyway:
Minor:
You could swap this regarding the encounter you do.
I’m lazy and just run Shakari for Poison Immunity and some Chaos reduction.
