Convert to PDF?

Once your music is ready is it possible to convert it to a PDF? Or does anyone know how I would go about having it published from the existing files? Thanks!

I was able to use the export option and all of the songs were saved as individual pdf files in one folder. It is exactly what I was looking for. Now I can edit them in acrobat and send them off to print and bind them! Thanks so much!!

I have the opposite problem. I am able to save music to my computer as a PDF. These are not images of the music, they are just a basic PDF. However, I am unable to export the PDF to MuseScore as a MSCZ type of document. Also, I have been unable to find any reliable software that will do this.

Many songs are in a key that does not work for leading church worship services. I would like to to MuseScore to change the songs to a different key without having to go in and create a new score (entering in all of the notes, ets.) which is very time consuming.

Unfortunately, this is a very difficult problem to solve. Technology has recently gotten good enough at recognizing scanned text to be useful, and that’s a much easier problem to solve, als there are many more people interested in that problem and hence many more people working on it. I take it you tried the experimental «File / Import PDF» function from within MuseScore? What went wrong when you did?

So, how far did you get in this process?

As Marc has explained, the PDF import project for MuseScore is still experimental, and may or may not not yield the results you need. If it turns out that it does not, a thought occurs to me. You might speak with the director of your local high school music department and see if the school uses MuseScore in its music theory classes. If it does, you might be able to find some sympathetic music students willing to do input from your PDF scores, and send you mscz files which you can then transpose the to key(s) you need. What is the old proverb? ‘Many hands make light the work?’ Transcribing one hymn is not a big deal—by the time you find a program to do the work for you (and there is no assurance that you will), you could have done it quicker yourself. But if you have a lot of music to transcribe from old, public-domain hymnals, and you are not (obviously) doing this for profit, it makes sense to ask your local community for some willing hands.

As a curiosity, how much are bassoon reeds now?

@Cindy – If you want to convert a pdf sheet music (not image!) there is this software: PDFtoMusicPro (http://www.myriad-online.com/en/products/pdftomusicpro.htm). You can import the music and edit it, then export as MusicXML (and import in MuseScore). You can download the trial version and see if it works.
I use the simple version PDFtoMusic to let play the pdf scores: you can export as midi but not as MusicXML.
This software will sing your scores, too. 😉

Does Musescore allow PDF import?

I have a lot of vocal arrangements created in [ahem] other software that I have printed out to PDF. I would like to continue working on these. Sticking with Musescore is my preferred option, however I am unable to import them.This feature seems to be on other [paid for] notation software.

Is it possible to add this to the plug-in framework.

It impossible to import PDF to the MuseScore.
PDF is a graphical format and it does not contain any information about notes,durations, etc.

So you can import it to Adobe Illustrator, but no to music software.

You are looking for OMR (Optical Music Recognition) software

A couple of days ago, the musescore site is offering a PDF import feature!!

It converts music scores saved as PDF files to the MusicXML format, which Musescore supports for importing. Here’s a link to their page:

Hi, When I press the Select PDF file button, for converting PDF files, nothing happens (no reaction)
I have converted several files. Should these files be deleted? How do I do that?
Could that be the reason for my problem?

Давно хотела записать видео про конфертацию нотного текста из формата PDF в формат для нотного редактора. Когда-то очень давно, ещё во времена учёбы в училище и консерватории я работала только в программе Finale, в которой очень много возможностей, включая форматирование PDF в читаемый программой текст.

На сегодняшний день технологии продвинулись далеко, но всё равно до сих пор нет качественной программы распознавания нотного текста. В любом случае, идеального результата не будет.

Подобная процедура нам необходима в различных ситуациях — например, когда у нас есть старые нотные сборники и мы хотим их перевести в цифру, а также что-то подправить. Когда мы хотим сделать аранжировку на конкретное произведение, когда хотим вырезать из оркестровой или хоровой партитуры и т.д.

MuseScore — это бесплатная программа для конвертации PDF в файл mcsz. Онf работает на программном обеспечении Audiveris с открытым исходным кодом. Цифровая партитура предназначена для открытия в нотном редакторе Musescore, для дальнейшего редактирования.

Как это работает?

Совет : лучшие результаты достигаются с изображениями с уровнем серого и разрешением около 300 точек на дюйм.

Несовместимые PDF-файлы

Не пытайтесь конвертировать один и тот же PDF-файл дважды, возможно, ваш PDF-файл несовместим с конвертером. Это может быть связано с различными причинами, такими как качество PDF-файла, сложность партитуры или другими причинами. Не стесняйтесь попробовать другой файл pdf!

Also had the same problem.
MuseScore 1.3 was so much better, sound quality, score format, etc.

Pardon? The default sound in 1.x was horrible and the score format has improved a lot too
But if you really need to, you can have the same sound as in 1.3 in 3.0 too, see https://musescore.org/en/handbook/soundfont-0 and take TimGM6mb
And if you have problems with the score format, open a thread about this, it is likely just a misunderstanding that could get cleared in a discussion.

Please elaborate why you feel the score formatting has not improved.

It can occasionally be true that a score with many manual adjustments in 1.3 might look different when imported into 2.0 and some re-adjustments might be necessary to restore the look one worked for in 1.3. That’s because the default position for elements is so much better in 2.0, the manual adjustments that were needed in 1.3 might end up being counterproductive. We tried to minimize the impact of these improvements so that existing scores would still look good, but occasionally you might see cases where they look worse at first. So I could see how one might initially get the impression that something was wrong.

When I export to PDF it only saves online, not on my computer. I need to send parts to musicians but I can’t send a link to an online PDF because most people don’t have microsoft Edge (which is the only browser it saves to). I’ve tried everything but can’t seem to save it as a PDF that is on my computer and that I can send through email. Can anyone help.

From the file menu chose export and change the save as type to PDF.

Also, if you’re taking about a score on musescore.com and chose PDF there:
We don’t ever export to a browser, but as Edge has the capability to show PDFs in the browser, it doesn’t automatically offer you to download that file. All you’d have to do is, when it is showing the PDF press Ctrl + S (the default shortcut for Save File) and it should ask you where you wish to save the file locally.

Just In case it helps put this in perspective:

So, after using File / Export to saver your file as PDF, just ignore the fact that for whatever reason your operating system chose to open it using Edge, and just pay attention to what folder you actually saved to (in the File / Export dialog). The file will be in that folder when you go to attach it to an email.
