8 Things You Can Do Now to Protect Trans Kids

LGBTQ Americans have been bracing for the impact of a Republican president for months, and on Wednesday afternoon, the Trump administration took its first step towards rolling back LGBTQ civil rights. New restrictions will withdraw previous protections established under the Obama administration, most notably the ability of transgender students in public schools to use the bathroom in which they feel most comfortable.

These restrictions will affect one of the most vulnerable populations in the country: transgender people are nearly ten times more likely to attempt suicide than the rest of the general public, and hate crimes against transgender people вЂ” including murder вЂ” remain «disturbingly common,» according to NBC News. Public schools can be a critical place in the lives of young trans kids, who are often subject to bullying; moreover, how public schools treat trans kids can serve as a model for how cisgender students learn to treat their trans peers.

The repeal of the Obama administration’s protections has frightening implications for the trans community, and by extension for the LBGT community as a whole. In the wake of this change, therefore, many LGB-identifying people and allies are wondering how to protect trans kids and how to fight to have schools protect them, too. While the LGBT community and other marginalized groups may not have full protection at the federal level until a president is elected who values their rights, there is a lot that can be done in the meantime to help protect one of America’s most at-risk groups.

Donate to Trans Lifeline

How you can help protect trans kids right now

Trans kids need protection, and there are several ways you can advocate for their safety.

On Wednesday, the Trump administration revoked Obama-era guidance that allowed transgender students to use public school restrooms matching their gender identity. The move has received massive backlash, spurring the hashtag #ProtectTransKids in an effort to show solidarity with trans youth.

But how exactly can advocates protect trans kids, especially now? Below are just a few tangible things you can do to help in the immediate aftermath of this setback to the community.

1. Donate to orgs supporting trans students’ rights.

Impactful nonprofits have long advocated for transgender youth, both inside and outside the classroom — and they could use your help.

The list below shows just a few of the leading organizations fighting for trans students through policy and other forms of meaningful support.

Trans Student Educational Resource: As a youth-led organization, TSER works to transform the educational system for transgender and gender-nonconforming students, offering advocacy workshops for young people and teacher trainings led by youth.

The National Center for Transgender Equality: The National Center for Transgender Equality works to advance the rights of the trans community through advocacy and empowerment. The organization, composed almost entirely of trans professionals, is devoted to ending discrimination and violence against transgender people through education and policy change.

Transgender Law Center: The Transgender Law Center works to challenge and change policies and laws to allow the trans community to live safer, authentic lives.

American Civil Liberties Union: The ACLU, which is taking Gavin Grimm’s school bathroom case to the Supreme Court in March, is a leading advocacy organization devoted to protecting the rights of marginalized communities in the U.S.

2. Listen to transgender kids.

Trans youth are experts on their own needs — and we have the obligation to trust their voices, no matter their age.

To advocate for trans students, listen to what they want from the educational system. Whether it’s through IRL conversations or via social media, trans kids can — and do — assert their own opinions, perspective and desires. They just need the space to be heard.

3. Show up for trans kids — literally.

While the recent rollback takes away federal guidelines, schools and states still have the power to create their own policies and expectations. To insure school administrators know how crucial protections are for transgender youth, it’s important for adult advocates to speak up.

Call the superintendent of your local school district to ask about school policies and protections for transgender students. Show up to school committee meetings to demand inclusive policies. Call your state department of education to advocate for statewide protections.

Take an active role on the local level to make school better for transgender kids in your community.

4. Provide school leaders with trans-inclusive training.

Trans student comfort isn’t just limited to the bathroom — it extends to the classroom, too. Teachers and administrators are at the frontlines of supporting trans youth in schools, but sometimes they don’t have the training to do so effectively.

To help close this gap, advocates can step in to organize comprehensive trainings that foster more understanding and acceptance. Connect your local school district with an LGBTQ organization in town, or lead a training yourself. Above all, stress to educators how crucial it is to prioritize understanding of trans identity.

5. Help your local school start a trans advocacy group.

To help improve the educational climate for trans students, it’s important to affirm their identity. Creating safe spaces like a Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) — which also welcomes trans youth, regardless of its name — is essential to give transgender kids the support and connections they need to thrive in school.

6. Mentor trans youth.

While school is a major part of any young person’s life, protecting transgender kids extends beyond the classroom. Advocates can play a major role in helping transgender students thrive by offering your time and guidance after the school day ends.

Mentoring trans youth is especially important, given that stigma and discrimination makes the trans community vulnerable to less economic and social opportunity. Trans youth are also at significant risk to be estranged or shunned from their families, making it rare for them to have positive and affirming adult figures in their lives.

Connect with local LGBTQ advocacy organizations to see if there are opportunities to mentor trans youth in your area — especially if you’re trans yourself. It’s vital for youth to see how their futures could unfold, and mentors can offer that clarity.

7. Look ahead to the next fight.

While staying mindful of this situation’s urgency, also make sure you take time to look ahead to what’s next for national protections for transgender students.

In the battle for bathroom access, the next stop is the Supreme Court — a fight two years in the making. Gavin Grimm, a 17-year-old transgender teen from Virginia, is suing his school district for the right to use the men’s bathroom in his high school. The case will mark the first time the Supreme Court is debating transgender rights, and the decision will inarguably set the tone for trans rights moving forward.

Though the case is in jeopardy due to the Trump administration’s rollback, Grimm still intends to push forward.

Keep tabs on Grimm’s case in March. And, if the court decides to deny Grimm the right to use the men’s room or denies to hear his case, get ready to protest.

8. Tell trans youth you care.

It may seem like a simple tip, but it can make a world of difference to a transgender child.

Trans youth are on the receiving end of persistent bias, hate and discrimination. They’re constantly reading news stories detailing the community’s high suicide rates, low employment rates and high homelessness rates. They’re forever correcting people who mistakenly or purposefully use incorrect pronouns, and fighting to simply exist as they are in the world. Now, they’re being targeted by some of the most powerful officials in the country.

Take the time to remind trans youth of their power, brilliance and resilience against a world that often feels unbearably cruel. Affirm their feelings, needs and wants. Above all, tell them you care.

I despair when I read stories of kids as young as two being labelled as ‘trans’ – such children need protecting from their parents

“Maddie knew she was different from a very young age. By the time she was 2, she was already enamored by her Sunday school teacher’s high-heeled shoes, which she regularly asked to try on. She strutted around the house wearing her sister’s princess costumes, and all her friends were girls.”

And with that, Maddie’s mother decided that she had a transgender child. This story, featured in The Washington Post earlier this week, takes a quite predictable walk through the usual scenarios. Refusal to leave the house dressed as a boy, at age four, led inexorably to traditional girly outfits. There was hardship at school and worries over the rights of “trans kids” to play sport, not that the child was “much of an athlete.” Now aged 14, the child is on medication to prevent normal development during puberty. According to reports, a hormone blocker was implanted in 2019.

I read these stories with a mixture of sadness and outrage. Sadness for children who have been propelled onto a conveyor belt of social and medical transition; children who will never experience the puberty that their bodies were designed for; children whose chance of becoming parents themselves one day is possibly extinguished before they know what it means to be an adult. I am outraged by doctors who facilitate such treatment, and legislators who allow them to do it.

But the central character in this report isn’t the child but the mother. Katie Jenifer describes herself as, “a mama bear and will advocate fiercely for my kid, and for all the trans and LGBTQ kiddos out there as if I was their mama bear, too.” She means it. Not only has she joined two boards of directors for LGBTQ associations, she went to law school where she focussed on LGBTQ rights. Earlier this year Jenifer stood before North Carolina’s state legislature to testify against a proposed bill that would bar transgender students from competing on school sports teams that correspond with their gender identities.

This is clearly an adult on a mission, “I just want to be a resource and somebody who is affirming and supportive,” she said, adding that she also wants to help people who transition later in life.

As someone who did transition in later life, I suppose that I am supposed to be grateful to Jenifer and the other “Mama Bears” that become so proactive in a campaign that has taken over their lives. But I am not. Rather, I am deeply concerned by what I see.

At the very time in life that children should be exploring what it means to be human in the one body we are all given, decisions are being made for them. I fear that these are often the wrong decisions. Previously, watchful waiting was adopted – allowing children to grow up with psychological support but without physical interventions, and many later desisted. A study from 2008 by Wallien and Cohen-Kettenis attempted to follow the experience of 77 children aged between five and 12 who had been referred to a specialist clinic because of gender dysphoria. When they were followed up around 10 years later, only 27% were still gender dysphoric. Meanwhile, 43% had desisted and the other 30% were untraceable. The authors concluded that most children with gender dysphoria will not remain gender dysphoric after puberty.

In England, gender dysphoric children are referred to The Gender Identity Development Service (GIDS) run by the Tavistock and Portman NHS trust. Its website lists several more studies that corroborate the conclusion made by Wallien and Cohen-Kettenis. According to GIDS, “In the majority of cases these feelings [of gender dysphoria] seem to discontinue either before, or early in, puberty.” They put their own figure on it, “Across all studies approximately 16% continue with their gender identification.”

That means five in six desist, and that brings us back to the plight of gender dysphoric children in 2021, though how a two year-old can possibly be diagnosed with gender dysphoria is beyond my comprehension. Young children do engage in cross-gender behaviour, though other families may have recognised it for what it was: children playing dress-up. Engaging in fantasy play is a normal part of child development; it hardly means a child is destined to be transsexual. At the same time, all their friends were girls. Maybe that was because their play mates were chosen for them? But it seems the die was cast, though becoming a “trans kid” does not seem to have brought much in the way of peace and contentment. Jenifer reported the consequences: exclusion from activities and “transphobic incidents.” Why would anyone put their child through any of that?

The Washington Post shed more than a little light on that question. Their report finished with Jenifer’s reaction to the setting aside of the North Carolina Bill, “That’s exactly why I wanted to become a lawyer,” Jenifer said. “That’s my whole motivation – to protect people.”

Protecting which people, is maybe the first question we should be asking. The girls who are now losing out to boys in sport are hardly being protected. But, while it sounds noble to want to protect others, even more important questions arise over motivation and outcome. Why does Jenifer want to protect people and what does she hope to achieve by being an LGBTQ champion? Speaking about her own child, she said, “She will probably need legal support throughout her life unless things drastically change in this country. … she’s going to need somebody to fight for her on those legal fronts, and who better to fight for her than her own mom?”

Is all this to benefit the child, or is it to satisfy Jenifer’s own needs? That, in my view, is the crucial question that we should be asking.
