I own all three. Stellaris takes the top spot for me. Real time, lots of decisions, lots of control (micro managing is kinda my thing) plus the battles are fantastic. Has its cons, with mods not being compatible after a patch so you have to wait..meh, small thing though.

ES2, is fun. However its much faster than stellaris, and most of is turn based. Combat is real time but all you can decide is which tatic to use at what stage. Then you just kick back, and watch the firefight. The combat looks pretty good but, those sound effects are really lacking imo. If you get a strong enough fleet or fleets, you can steam roll the universe quickly.

Gal Civ 3, is also fun. Turn based, you can have tons of empires, tech to research and with all the dlc’s it gives you one heck of a challenge. The BIG selling point behind it is the ship designer. Its superior to both Es:2 and Stellaris. Your ships, your style. Its more of a. design choice really. You can mix n match parts from all ship design styles, then theres the steam mod page where you can download other peoples hard work.

I enjoy play often on Stellaris than two game. I tried to play both game but dunno feel not clickly (maybe bit bored. dunno). Stellaris seem bit enjoy due rng star galaxy and etc features. I would say, I enjoy play Civilization 5 (please not 6) as feel similar to Stellaris.

I admit to do replay sometime and still not feel boring.

TBH it’s not like combat in Stellaris is any deeper. The only tactical decision you can currently make is if you attack chokepoint A or B. But when two fleets clash you do the same. Sit back and watch the fireworks. Sometimes push the emergency FTL button if things go down. In Endless Space 2, you can at least select various fleets tactics.

But in terms of ship designs Endless Space 2 pretty much takes the spot. The sheer amount of possibilities in terms of designs is massive.
Apart from the usual, these ships have lazors and these ships have missiles, you can have dedicated repair vessels, that do nothing but repair your other ships during combat, then you can have planetary siege vessels, that don’t do much in combat but do massive damage to planets during siege, salvage vessels that generate resources each time you kill an enemy ship, harvesters etc etc. None of these is possible in Stellaries, because there you basically choose only the weapon type and shield vs armor.

Also, the race creation system offers way more customization than Stellaris.

i got all 3 of them, i loved stellaris from the start and still play it despite the many changes it still remained a good game (though it does require some mods to be playable tbh)

Gal Civ 3 i tried really hard and played often but at some point it just gets boring. On paper it has everything you should ever require but it just isnt the right mixture. Feels like someone tried cooking a meal seen in a superb restaurant using all the right ingredients but lack the understanding to properly cook it.

Endless Space 1 i loved, ES 2 i tried and liked initially until the battle system ruined it for me. Its a really well done, nice looking game but meh. lost me somehow along the way.

Endless Space has better battles imho. It also has more diverse gameplay in terms of races. Every one feels totally different in terms of how you approach their expansion and stuff. Being a turned based game, it also has a bit of a more tactical approach to fleets and where you place them. The technology system is somewhat fun, in that you cannot research all types of weapons at the same time, as one technology cuts you off from other ones.

Stellaris in its most recent version has turned from a braindead fleet simulator to a more advanced economy system, which has lots of similarities with ES2. That being the rare resources and addition of ship modules costs of those. I still think they should develop further into the rare resources, as it would influence the way you expand and develop some more. Battles are just point-click-forget, where higher stats win.

Never played GalCiv 3.

ES2 has more developed races, they feel more alive. Each has it’s own story during the game which adds nice flavour. It has more advanced combat mechanics imho. Economy seems a bit dumber, although there are features to it, that are more developed imho. You manage entire systems instead of separate planets.

Stellaris has more freedom in race creation. Combat is much more simplified and easier to manage. Economy in recent patch pushed it into more advanced territory, which is a great improvement. Technology is simpler, with no true bad choices.

On a total side note, I prefer the graphic style of Endless Space over Stellaris in terms of ship design. Each race has it’s unique ships and they are just wonderful! Prebattle phase, where ships go from cruise mode into battle mode and you see the animations of weapons popping out, priceless.

I have around 100 hours on stellaris and so far I’m enoying Endless Space 2 more. I’ve kinda fallen in love with it during the free weekend.

I just love how thematic this game is compared to Stellaris. In this game, each faction has their own unique ship design, some technologies are unique to some factions, some unqiue skills for heroes depending on faction, different faction populations have different benefits (like the new faction giving out science and bandwith per pop) and political impact, unique faction stories, unique playstyles obviously (united empire can buy techs/improvements with influence rather than dust, this fact HEAVILY influences so many decisions you have to make throughout the game). The list goes on and on.

In stellaris, it’s much more open-ended, which decreases linearity but makes everything feel more bland to me. Every single empire feels like humans but in alternate timelines (e.g. some love aliens, some want to purge them all, etc.), you won’t get anything really cool like a tree faction extending their vines to other empires (Endless Space 2). In stellaris, it’s even possible to come across an enemy empire that has the same exact destroyer design as you (like you both are using fungoid ship cosmetic with same weapons), for instance. It’s sorta the price you have to pay in Stellaris for such open-endedness, everything feels cut from the same cloth. However, I will admit that there are some crazy events that can happen in Stellaris that can really shake things up (late game crisis, crazy rare event chains that will turn your people into tomb world loving things of a different species) you won’t really find much of that in Endless Space 2. In the case of Stellaris’ events though, they’re cool to see the first time, but aren’t that entertaining for me in subsequent playthroughs. I imagine it’s similar for Endless Space 2 faction stories, but at least I don’t have to worry about coming across the same story if I play a different empire like I do in Stellaris.

Subjectivity is implied, but I’ll just remind everyone that everything stated in my post is my opinion and open to debate.

They’re both good in their own way, just depends what you’re looking for.

Stellaris:
-Grandy Strategy the Paradox way.
-Lots of races, even more with mods
-Lots of mods!
-Real time with RTS combat
-Lot of events to keep you immersed and busy
-Leaders feel bland.
-Colony Mgmt and tech are well done.
-Diplomacy is decent

Endless Space 2:
-Turned Based
-Not many races, but they are more unique to how you play and with more backstory and lore.
-Hero/Leader system with their own talent trees
— A little strategy behind combat, which are real time cinematic battles.
-Minor races that play a big role in your empire.
-Politcal parties with elections, different parties mean you get to choose different laws
-Dimplocy feels better.

You can’t really go wrong with either of these games. If I had to choose I’d say Stellaris, since I really haven’t played a space 4x like it. ES2 does a lot to build on the traditional TBS 4x games to make it very unique as well. If you got the funds, or they’re on sale you should pick both of them up.

yeah, they are pretty different games once you get into it.

Endless Space is more unique with its empires, and its tech. Which doesn’t lend itself to be as flexible or as expansive as Stellaris can, both use hyperlanes with alternative techs granting them different mobility. Endless space is a bit more story based I find with its culture.

Whereas Stellaris has a much more interesting designing empire system as well as what to specialize in.

Endless Space is much more limited in what you can do diplomatically, and the number of empires is severely reduced in comparison, which makes Stellaris a lot more fun and dynamic with having federations, defensive pacts, more cooperation really.

Stellaris also has more of an end game, and external threats, so you can actually play the game in co-op and work together for a stronger galaxy to face the true opponents that would seek to destroy it.

Endless Space really is a more standard one empire wins, 8 empires setup.

Also they have very different combat systems, and I know that in Endless Space 1, it was very broken and easy to abuse. (like one fleet could only battle 1 other fleet, meaning you could clog a space with a bunch of 1 ships and no one could get through).

Essentially, if you want quick multi player games, Endless Space is more built for that.

If you like the diplomacy, exploration, and building more unique empires, Stellaris is it.

Fan of both games. They are both 4x but the depth I believe is the biggest difference

Stellaris is far more deep of a game than ES2 but also much harder to learn.

I find that ES2 races are way more mechanically different allowing for quite different gameplay depending who you decide to play has. However that’s probably the only place ES2 has more of something. ES2 is more like Civilization where mechanics are there but they are a bit more surface level.

I play both game. Stellaris mostly alone as it’s a slower game I find and I play ES2 with some friends who like 4x games but don’t want to spend hours and hours learning the mechanics before actually being able to play.

Oh also ES2, only the host of the game need the expansions. Not sure if Stellaris run the same way.

I like both as well, and while both are Paradox games, the question is a bit like trying to compare EU to CK- it’s two totally different animals.

Stellaris is more personal story driven- you’re creating the epic saga of your particular empire, and the game writers spent a TON of time adding in all the typical sci-fi tropes to help flesh that out for you. While there’s some options to create your own empire in Endless Space 2, overall you’re locked in to playing one of the given race stories. ES2 is more like sitting down to play a game of Twilight Imperium- sure you can play the Hacan your way, but youre still going to play them like Hacan, not like Norr or Yin. And like TI4, ES2 is still a hella fun game.

The other big area of difference is combat. Here its a bit more counter intuitive. Stellaris gives you more actual control over your space battles, but your combat decisions tend to matter more in ES2. Meaning; while you can faint and decoy with fleets in Stellaris, in the actual fights the rock/paper/scissor tech approach most space strat games take comes way, way second to who’s fleet has the bigger number. 9 times out of ten, if one guy has a fleet with 8K strength and another has 9K- the 9K guy is going to win handily- like it’ll never even be in doubt though he’ll take some casualties. Again, against any brain-dead AI you can do stuff, but that’s true of every game.
ES2 by comparison, even though the actual space battles are on rails (ie. you just pick orders before a battle and see how it plays out) fleet composition and tactics choice can easily make the smaller strength fleet prevail. Ship design also seems more impactful as a result of that.

Both have space battles that are pretty to watch though.

ES2 is the better base game, more polish, more depth, more replayability, better diplomacy, much better combat (you can actually interact with it in some way, the visuals are much better, and you can also just skip it if you want). Both games suffer from AI issues that become more of an issue later in the game. ES2 is like a really deep sea, while Stellaris is like a really shallow ocean with a lot more scope but little meaning to most of the mechanics other than flavor.

The thing is, ES2 never got the mod community it needed, there are a few small mods but nothing major. Stellaris on the other hand has a ridiculous amount of mods, and many take that shallow ocean and dig it out adding the depth the game needs. Modded Stellaris pushes way out ahead as you can get pretty much anything you want out of the game, it’s hard for any game to compete with that.

I have played ES 2. When I got it like 1-2 years ago I chosed between ES2 and Stellaris (consider both of them to be in the «Master of Orions»-genre) and decided to buy ES2 because at that time community was not that positive about state of the game. Which now seems to have changed to be more positive.

I would expect (knowing Paradox) to be more complex and more depth and allowing different play styles. ES2 IMO does offer that buy by having different races have unique capabilities allowing for different play style and increasaing replayabiolity (when trying a different race).

I do like (and want) complexity but with these kind of game you might also end up in micro-management hell.

For those of you who has played both how do you they compare?

Downloading Stellaris now since it is free play this weekend but base game might be very different to a full gamw witrh all DLCs

They play the same but they are different. They are same that they are in space, you make ships, colonize planets, research etc.

The difference is, Stellaris is real time not turn based. You can’t control combat. Ground combat is boring as hell compared to ES 2. I can’t play Stellaris without mods, but thankfully Paradox let’s me play the way I want with mods.

So what are you looking for exactly? Stellaris Vanillia in my opinion is not very good. With the DLC and mods has become an awesome game for me. So it depends on what exactly you are looking for. There is really no story like ES2. You can micro or not.

It also depends what your PC is like. Want to play on huge maps, better have a powerful PC.

Let us know what you looking for. Without DLC you will not have all those mega structures. Playing for free you will get the idea what Stellaris is and if you like that, some of the DLC if you want to get it, will make your enjoyment so much more and then the flavour of mods is awesome.

Want to play Star Wars. Check. Want to play Star Trek. Check. Those are freaking AWESOME mods.

A lot of these replies are simply anwsering which game each person prefers, which is only part of the OP’s question. As far as which game is easier for a 4x newbie, I’d say it’s definitely ES2. Admittedly, I have not played the more recent updates for Stellaris, but when I played it I found myself having to restart frequently because of either my own mistakes (due to what I find to be a steep learning curve) or bad luck as other empires quickly crowded me. I’m also not fond of being FORCED to hand over system building to an incompetent AI. Production penalties are okay, I guess, but the AI makes REALLY dumb construction decisions.

One of my earlier games fell apart becuase of the horrible federation system. Instead of having something logical, like group votes, each faction within the federation takes turns being in charge—to disasterous results. In that game, I believe it was myself, two close allies, and another, weak faction that formed a federation. All was going well until the weakest member’s turn for leadership arrived. Immediately, they invited a faction that one of my allies hated, and the only recourse available to said ally was to leave the federation. My other ally then left, seemingly in solidarity, leaving me alone with two wimpy factions that didn’t even share a border with me! Despite my best efforts, I was unable to reestablish firm alliances with my two former comrades—leaving my own modest empire far too vulnerable to enemies. I didn’t bother playing THAT to the bitter end.

ES2, on the other hand, has a softer cap on total star systems and continues to allow full control no matter the size. Overall, I find ES2 to be more straightforward, and its easy to look ahead in the tech tree to plan out what techs you need. Want to colonize that artic planet? No problem! Just find and research the right tech. One system having population approval issues? Build the appropriate system improvements, or research the ones you need. Most stuff is easy to find and understand. Likewise, win conditions are reasonably varied and easy to understand. Plus, in the game creation options you can enable or disable any win-cons you don’t want to mess with. Sophons keep rushing that science victory? Disable it! Or, alternatively, are you a master of profit? Do you keep winning too quickly? Turn that win-con off and take your time getting to a diplomatic victory. Want a total domination victory? Turn off all the other win-cons and slug it out in a survival of the fittest match. Keep in mind that certain factions are geared towards certain victory types, and disabling those can seriously impair a faction’s chance of victory.

However, I still really like Endless Space 2. ES2 is far superior to ES1 by nearly every instance, which is a great thing as I despised ES1. I hope Amplitude adds the Harmony again, but better than they were in ES, as I really liked that race.
