Thank you very much. Now I know, I hope it is online too (?)
I knew it. After all, Cinderella’s mean sisters were stepsisters and we do have that specific word in the famous story in Spanish too.

So far every English speaker that I have asked understands the two terms this way. So how can so many dictionaries be wrong??
By the way, my Webster’s Encyclopedic Unabridged Dictionary defines the terms the same way as your OED.

I was absolutely astounded to read this thread. Convinced that there was some gross error on the part of the OED or Webster’s, I checked Dictionary.com and here’s what it cites:
This just complicates matters further because they are contradictory definitions!
One of my hobbies (obsessions?) is genealogy and any genealogy researcher in the world will define half-brother and step-brother as you all have. Is there some monstrous plot by the dictionary publishers? And how in the world can an online dictionary have two separate definitions?
Amazing.

I looked for the meaning of stepbrother in Spanish, it gave me hermanastro, the same ocurred with half brother.
I thought that hermanastro was not blood related and a half brother was. Am I mistaken?
If I want to ask: do you have any stepbrothers or stepsisters, how do I pose this question?

I looked at the WordReference Dictionary, and found that it says that stepbrother and half brother are synomyms. I have to disagree. I checked other dictionaries, and that does not seem to be the case, nor is it the way I have always understood those terms.
Another interesting thing: In the WordReference Dictionary stepbrother/half brother are defined as «the son of oneΒ΄s step parent by a previous marriage» (not blood related) and if you look up stepsister/half sister it says, «a sister who has only one parent in common with you» (blood related). The dictionary contradicts itself.
A half brother is «half» because he shares half a bloodline with you. A stepbrother is «step» because he is the son of a stepparent (who has no blood relation to you) and another person, so neither can the stepbrother be blood related to you.
