Violet Wand Basics
Violet Wands are definitely one of the most desirable toys available.
They are incredibly versatile, providing many different levels of intensity, technique and sensations. The basic techniques are so easy to learn that you will be using your wand right away, and yet you will be able to build on those techniques into a marvelous range. Violet Wands can provide an incredible range of sensations, from lush tingles to sharp shocks to simulating the feelings of burning and cutting. You will be limited only by your imagination.
In use, a Violet Wand typically produces a fine shower of electrical discharges (i.e., sparks, more or less) from the tip of a glowing glass “wand”. The wand can be set to a range of intensities from very mild tickling to excruciating pain, and interchangeable glass or metal electrodes can be used to distribute the charge to the body in a variety of different ways.
Most Violet Wand kits include a variety of different glass tubes of different shapes, sizes and colors (the color depending on the type of gas within the tube). Different tubes produce different intensities of shock and the various shapes allow the spark/s to be applied with greater or lesser precision and spread. For example, a rake-shaped tube may be used to apply four or five sparks, more or less simultaneously, from the tip of each tine.
Some kits also include an electrode, in the form of a metal plate, which may be used in place of the glass tube. The electrode is not applied directly to the bottom – which would be very intense – but, rather, somehow permanently connected to top’s skin, such as by tucking it into the waistband. When the top caresses the bottom, there is an electrical discharge between the players which both feel. Alternatively, the top may hold something metal, such as a small chain or Wartenberg Wheel, to apply the effect.
When the (small) electrical current of a Violet Wand impinges on the nerves, it causes sensations such as tickling all the way up to sharp shocks.
Like any electrical toy, a Violet Wand has an obvious psychological effect, especially on players new to it. Besides the spark that the Violet Wand produces, the psychological effect is heightened by the eerie glow of the tubes, the buzz of the Tesla coil, the crackle of the sparks, and the distinctive smell given off by the production of ozone gas.

Violet Wand History
A Brief Look at Violet Wand and Violet Ray History
Violet Wands Began Their History With a Grandparent Medical Device Called a ‘Violet Ray’ in the Early 1900s.
That’s over 100 years ago.
Like other ‘inventions’ of the same the time period, violet rays were marketed with over-exaggerated medical claims. There is a family resemblance between a violet ray grandparent and today’s Violet Wand.
About 1940, there was a transitional device that bridged the gap between violet rays and Violet Wands, a sort of ‘missing link’ in their evolution. They are very similar but they are also two very different types of devices.
Some people use violet rays like Violet Wands and vice versa, but you can not do every Violet Wand technique with a violet ray, and you can’t get violet ray therapeutic frequency out of a Violet Wand.
Later, They Were ‘Discovered’ by the Sexually Adventurous for Their Amazing Range of Sensations They Were Capable of Providing.
Around 1995 saw the first actual Violet Wand produced for the fetish market.
Since then, they have continued to climb in popularity as more and more people discover them.
The vintage violet ray devices are no longer manufactured the same way, and the two technologies have diverged in recent years.
You can still go to a beauty salon and find a modern violet ray device used to give you a facial, but it feels nothing like a Violet Wand!

About Violet Wands for Beginners
How do you learn about Violet Wands if you are new to them? What’s the best way to get started with them?
We know there are a lot of products on this site and a lot of information about Violet Wands. It’s not always easy to know what to get. There are so many options, accessories and electrodes.
We hope this Beginner’s Guide about Violet Wands will help you understand where different products fit into how you play. Let’s get started.
First, You Need a Violet Wand
The first thing to know about Violet Wands, is that your Violet Wand is your power supply. It transforms household current into a steady stream of sparks that energize your nerves and stimulate your skin.
This is called the output and the output varies between types of wands and different makes and models. There are two basic types of Violet Wands as a power supply.
The first is the heavy duty electromechanical types which run on an electro-magneto coil. The second type are the electronic solid state types that run on a circuit board.
Which Type of Violet Wand is Right For You?
The electronic solid state types are best for beginners. They are easier to use than the electromechanical ones, which can be more difficult for beginners to learn. Some people jump right to the electromechanical violet wands if they know they are going to love violet wands. Or if they really want to get into them and all the techniques. Electromechanical wands are best if you will be playing ‘heavy’ or using violet wands heavily.
But for beginners, the solid state/electronic types are best. Especially if you aren’t sure how deeply you want to get into violet wands or don’t want to make a big investment. Solid state violet wands have no ‘positional’ issues, so you can hold them at any angle, and their output is consistent. They are much lighter in weight and easy to handle. They don’t break your bank account either.
If you are sure you want to do all the edge play techniques like violet wand fireplay or branding, then you probably want an electromechanical wand. Though there are many solid state wands that are strong enough to do those techniques, heavy play requires more heavy duty gear.
Guidelines
This beginner’s guide about Violet Wands is only guidelines: many beginners want an electromechanical wand and vice versa. And, many people wind up with both types after they find they really love Violet Wands. You can always turn an electromechanical wand down but solid states have some limits. Think of it this way, they both are cars, both take you where you want to go, but one has an electric motor and one has a Hemi.
Solid State : Beginners new to Violet Wands, those on a budget, those who want to learn Violet Wands before making more investment, or whom want ease of use and don’t need the heaviest play, prefer ergonomic and lightweight Solid State Violet Wands.
Electromechanical : know you love violet wands/want to invest in good gear/are a heavy player/really want to get into violet wands and everything they can do/need the highest level of sensations
We have different models of both types. So check our Violet Wand Comparison Chart to get the details of the different models we carry.
Then You Need Some Electrodes!
After deciding on which type of Violet Wand meets your needs, then you need some attachments.
Violet Wands are just the power supply and they require the various electrodes and attachments to do the different techniques and achieve the different sensations.
The most popular attachments to start with are Glass Electrodes.
Glass electrodes that have a bigger surface area are less intense than glass electrodes that have a small surface area. A smaller surface area concentrates the output more.
You want a mushroom electrode. The general purpose Mushroom electrode is in the middle of the intensity scale of glass violet wand electrodes.
Everyone gets a mushroom!
For a couple of reasons, they are the best for beginners. They glow in great colors as the gas inside them is excited by the Violet Wand current.
Made of glass, the glass provides a fail-safe buffer to electrical current. They are easy to use, just plug them into the wand.
They look great. And they all feel different too.
Best Violet Wand Kits for Beginners
This 4 electrode kit provides you with a good range of sensations and experimentation in a beginner’s kit.
The Mirage Violet Wand is 35kv in output which is on the erotic end of the output range, but is still just enough to be able to try all the advanced techniques.
And, its a very economical model so you don’t have to invest a lot in finding out if you like Violet Wands. Though, we know that you will!
Glass electrodes all have different properties, sensations and uses, so after you are familiar with these four you can always get more and grow your collection. However, these basic four give you a really good range to start with.
You don’t have to get more glass electrodes, as there are plenty of other things to try.
After The Violet Wand Basics: Now What?
The Two “Must Have” Violet Wand Accessories
Once you have your Violet Wand and some glass electrodes, you can do Direct Techniques. Direct Techniques are where you plug an attachment into the wand and apply the current directly from the wand to your partner.
Direct Techniques are the first of three Basic Techniques sets. The other two Basic Techniques are Indirect and Reverse. For Indirect techniques, the wand user electrifies their own touch. This makes it possible for the sparks to shoot out from their fingertips, or any other body part. And, it makes it possible to pick up something metal or conductive and use that to make the sparks on your partner.
So there are two items that are considered ‘must have’ items after you get some electrodes and want to start expanding your techniques and play. The first is the Body Contact Cable.
The Body Contact Cable.
The Body Contact Cable is what you use to electrify your own touch. One end plugs into the Violet Wand like an electrode, and you hold onto the other end (or tuck it in your waistband, sock, bra or corset, anyplace it makes good contact with your skin. Now you become electrified!
You don’t feel it, but the current is traveling through you. Its a very energizing experience. If you bump a part of your body against something metal like a table leg, you’ll feel it as a spark. So use those fingertips to drive your partner wild!
Hold your fingers about 1/4″ above the skin, and lightly move away and closer as you find out the best positioning.
The Light Bulb Adapter
The Lightbulb Adapter plugs into your Violet Eand and converts any regular household lightbulbs into Violet Wand Electrodes. Any household lightbulbs of regular Edison size (E26) and candelabra (E12) size.
Halogens, fluorescents, nightlight bulbs, appliance bulbs, decorative bulbs, Christmas bulbs, vanity bulbs, mercury bulbs, outdoor bulbs, indoor bulbs, the lamp from your sewing machine. Any lightbulb in your house will work as a Violet Wand Electrode!
And all the various lightbulbs will have different properties, strengths, sensations and visual effects. The entire lightbulb aisle in Home Depot or Lowe’s becomes a Violet Wand accessory aisle for you to choose from.
burned out lightbulbs work also! That’s because when they are used with a Violet Wand, the gas inside the bulb lights up and not the filament, so it doesn’t matter if the filament burns out. 😉
So, don’t throw your burned out lightbulbs away, put them in your Violet Wand kit!
Some bulbs glow blue, some purple, some red and some white. Some are sharp and painful, some are soft and with a glow. You’ll have a crazy good time experimenting with various lightbulbs.
This is a “must have” since it expands your play capacity in hundreds of ways..as many ways as there are lightbulbs.
There are separate models of Lightbulb Adapter sets for electromechanical Violet Wands due to their shorter nosecones of the TESLA wands. Make sure you get the correct model for your wand!
Violet Wand Toys
Plug your Body Contact Cable into your Violet Wand. Tuck the other end against your skin, inside your waistband. Then pick up something metal in your hand, like a butter knife and turn on the wand. Now you are electrified, but so is the butter knife. You won’t feel it, but the current is traveling through you, then from you to the butter knife. Now the butter knife is going to deliver the sparks to your partner.
Or you can make your own Violet Wand toys picking up what you have laying around. A handful of Christmas garland feels luxurious and picky with sparks all at the same time. You’ll be going through your kitchen drawers and your tool box looking for fun things to use. A Body Contact is a must have after you get your Violet Wand and glass electrodes, so that you can use Violet Wand toys!
Metal Electrodes
Since your Violet Wand is just your power supply, every electrode you plug into it has different properties, sensations or functions.
Metal Electrodes are more intense than glass electrodes.
Specialty Electrodes have specific functionality or a special purpose, like branding electrodes.
Expanding Your Violet Wand Kit
Now it comes down to expanding how you play, making your Violet Wand play easier, more intense, or broader.
You may want to start collecting electrodes to get the most variety of sensations and effects. Or decide to get a footswitch for your TESLA type wand, or a converter to take on an overseas trip. Perhaps you might need another case to hold all your lightbulbs.
You could graduate to a heavy duty TESLA Violet Wand or choose to dazzle your partner with a Charm Electrode to mark a special occasion. Intense phosphor could come up next on your wish list.
Some may want to combine types of play, like electrifying your Shibari, Violet Wand cupping, or including Violet Wands in your predicament bondage or playing with piercings or needles.
You may want to move into Advanced Techniques like Violet Wand fireplay, or find out that you like Reverse Techniques better than Indirect.
Ideas About Violet Wands
This beginner’s guide about Violet Wands is just the tip of the iceberg.
Lace a needle corset with colorful wire instead of ribbon; an electrified needle corset makes 10 times the endorphins. And if you already like cupping, then try Violet Wand cupping!
Of course there are some basics about Violet Wands, but there’s no end or upper limit. You can start out with erotic fizzing and sensuous outputs from the most basic beginner’s Violet Wand, and then you can just go up and upward.
Set up a chain link spiderweb and electrify it with your Violet Wand by using a dancing chain with clips or just clamping your body contact cable to the chain. Everyone tied to, or who comes in contact with the chain, will feel the spark!
Violet Wands Truly Are the One Toy That is For Everyone.
If you like sensuous and erotic pleasurable sensations, a Violet Wand does that. If you like very intense, a Violet Wand does that too.
No matter what you already like to do, whether its spanking or medical scenes or other type of fetish play, you can use your Violet Wand with it.
And, that is the best thing about Violet Wands. There’s almost no limit when it comes to playing with a Violet Wand, you are limited only by your imagination.
Using Your New Violet Wand
We have extensive articles on using your new wand under our Information and Techniques menus at the top of the website. So, we have a lot more than just this Beginner’s Guide!
We provide full support and information so that you can learn in-depth information about Violet Wands. Look for the articles that show you how to get started with playing.
Start slow; turn the wand way down and use a mushroom electrode. Introduce electricity gradually. Enjoy!
Violet Wand Techniques
Direct Violet Wand Techniques
Violet Wands can create sensations that range from erotic fizzy tingles to painful shocks and everything in between, so they take a little bit of experimenting. Test your settings and electrode on yourself first. Your Violet Wand is the power supply, and every electrode you choose will be different with different intensity levels and sensations.
The Mushroom Electrode is a good mid-range electrode, so start there. Most Violet Wand kits include a mushroom since they are mid-range and all purpose.
You can safely play with jewelry on, and even with piercings, but remember that jewelry and especially piercings will draw more sparks than surrounding naked skin, so removing jewelry and piercings is up to you.
If you prefer to remove it or leave metal wherever you desire a more intense sensation to occur. You can even add metal where you want more intense sparks, such as nipple clamps.
There Are Three Main Base Violet Wand Techniques and These Refer to Your Main Setup.
Direct technique is when you plug an electrode into the Violet Wand and apply the sparks directly to someone; it is the most commonly used. Then, the different electrodes provide the different sensations.
But there are two more base techniques, Indirect and Reverse. Without them, you limit yourself to only 1/3 of what a Violet Wand can do. Indirect technique allows you to electrify your own touch, to send sparks from your fingertips, or your tongue or anywhere else.
And Reverse technique lets you pick up Violet Wand floggers or other conductive toys with complete freedom of movement.
Bridge Violet Wand Techniques.
Getting from Direct to Indirect can be tricky, so these two Bridge Violet Wand techniques are a tutorial to help you get comfortable with the properties of Indirect.
Bridge #1: While you have the Mushroom Electrode in the Violet Wand and the wand is on, hold the electrode directly on someone’s skin. They will not feel a spark but the electricity will flow into them. Then, have that person tap someone else. The first person becomes electrified, so when they tap the second person, they produce a spark!
This is because humans are made up of a lot of water and are slightly salt, so the human body is conductive to electricity. Some people are more conductive than others too. Make a daisy chain of people this way, with each person in the chain becoming electrified. Eventually the electricity will die down as it travels through bodies and will peter out. So loop your ‘daisy’ chain back around if you have more people.
Bridge #2: Hold onto the Mushroom Electrode tightly with your left hand, and tuck your Violet Wand under your arm and turn on the wand with your other hand. You will not feel the electricity but you are now electrified. When you touch someone you will make a spark.
And, the spark can come from any part of your body! You will also make a spark if you bump into a metal table leg etc. You want to manage where the spark goes just like you manage where flogger tails go.
Indirect Violet Wand Techniques
After you do the two bridge techniques, you have a good idea of what happens with Indirect. Indirect is the base technique that allows you to electrify your own body and you become the electrode’ You can send sparks from your fingertips, or from any other part of your body. The electricity will pass through you, and you wont feel it till you touch someone. Here’s how:
You will need a Body Contact Cable for Indirect technique. You can learn about them here and here
Get Started
Insert your Mushroom Electrode into the Violet Wand, but do not twist! Use a straight motion. Twisting an electrode while you take it out or put it in will loosen the wand’s contacts over time, and can pull off your electrode end cap or crack the gas seal. So, put them in and take them out with a straight motion. If the Violet Wand has a separate power control, turn it on and begin with the lowest setting.
Using the electrode, apply the charge directly to your subject, experimenting with control settings, different electrodes, and distance you hold the spark away from the skin to achieve different sensations.
You can experiment with many different types of electrodes to insert directly into the Violet Wand, as they will all have different sensations and effects!
Reverse Violet Wand Techniques.
Violet Wand techniques are numerous, but you can experiment and experiment. And, what if you want more freedom of movement than with Indirect? Then use your Body Contact Cable in Reverse, such as attaching the Body Contact Cable to your partner instead of to you. This helps that they can drop the handle of the cable if the intensity becomes too much, acting like a safe-word So, Reverse is a great way to get beginners in love with the Violet Wand and open them up to new Violet Wand techniques.
Have them lie down, stand, or sit on the body contact pad, or duct tape it to their body, as long as there is good contact between the pad and their skin.
When you turn on the wand, Your subject person becomes their own Violet Wand electrode! Now touch them with a Violet Wand toy, and they still get the sparks while you get complete freedom of movement.
But, don’t stop there, Violet Wands are made for experimenting! Attach the Body Contact Cable to a metal rack that your subject is bound to, or to the Violet Wand Rope or metal chains that you use to tie them up.
Tips and Tricks.
There are more advanced Violet Wand techniques like knife-play, and you don’t have to use a sharp knife. If you use a butter knife with a Body Contact Cable and Reverse, the knife will feel like cutting. You can even chill it for cold metal plus hot sparks.
You can find more good information on Violet Wand safety and use at The Violet Wand Directory of Information.
Get Started.
Plug the Body Contact Cable into your Violet Wand. Tuck the long handle end against your skin somewhere; in your waistband or in your sock, anywhere it makes good contact with your bare skin. You can even duct tape it to yourself, or tuck it into a corset top where breasts hold it firmly.
Now you are the electrode, and you are electrified! Yes you can touch your partner with your bare hands, but that is just the beginning. Pick up any Violet Wand conductive toy such as Mylar Floggers, Finger Talons, Pinwheels, Ball Chain Floggers, or our Laser Knife and Glowdius Violet Wand sword, and the charge will pass from you to the Violet Wand toy which delivers the spark to your partner.
Each Violet Wand toy feels different, with different sensations and properties. So there are lots of Violet Wand accessories to choose from, whether you like picky sparks or lots of fizzy sparks, or a single hot spark.
