Sensible or sensitive?

Sensible имеет три основных значения:

sensible explanation – разумное объяснение

sensible advice– умный совет

sensible difference – ощутимая разница

sensible difficulties — заметные сложности

Yours is a very sensible plan. – Твой план очень разумен.

The purity of water exercises a sensible influence on fish. – Чистота воды оказывает заметное влияние на рыбу.

Still or quiet?

Still имеет следующие переводы:

Definite or definitive?

В этой паре прилагательных разница очевидна.

Definite имеет значение ‘точный, определенный, четко выраженный’:

definite aim — определенная цель

definite article — определенный артикль

definite proof — четкое доказательство

Definitive имеет несколько значений:

definitive decision — окончательное решение

definitive sentence — окончательный приговор

definitive answer — окончательный ответ

definitive type – отличительный тип

Discrete or discreet?

Помимо схожего звучания, следующая пара прилагательных не имеет ничего общего в лексическом значении.

Discrete переводится как ‘отдельный, изолированный, разрозненный, дискретный’

discrete task – отдельная задача

discrete group– разрозненная группа

discreet behavior – сдержанное поведение

discreet oil paintings – неброские картины маслом

Notable or noticeable?

Прилагательное notable обозначает ‘примечательный, выдающийся, значительный’

Noticeable имеет значение ‘приметный, бросающийся в глаза, видный, стоящий внимания’

noticeable error — заметная ошибка

Sensible, sensitive и sensational – в чем разница?

Знаете ли вы, что означает sensible? А являются ли sensitive и sensational синонимами слову sensible? Давайте разбираться в чем разница между sensible, sensitive и sensational.

Как использовать sensitive

Прилагательное sensitive связано с чувственной сферой и используется в следующих случаях.

1. Называя кого-то sensitive, мы имеем в виду, что этот человек все очень остро воспринимает и легко обижается. В этом случае мы переводим sensitive как «ранимый, обидчивый».

She is a very sensitive girl.

2. Также некоторые люди могут сопереживать, чувствовать чужую радость и боль. Про них мы обычно говорим «чуткий». Это еще одно значение прилагательного sensitive.

A sensitive person is able to feel other people’s emotions.

3. Sensitive может использоваться не только при описании человека, но и животных, растений, процессов и даже событий.

sensational news — сенсационные новости

Sensitive and sensible are words that are often confused with one another though there is difference between them in their meanings. These are two adjectives that come in the English language. Sensitive can be defined as quick to detect or be affected by slight changes. However, the word sensible can be defined as having or showing common sense. This clearly highlights that sensitive and sensible are two very different words. Through this article let us examine the differences between the two words, through examples.

What does Sensitive mean?

When it comes to the adjective sensitive this can be used in a number of situations.

If a person is easily affected, offended or made upset by others, such a person is considered as sensitive. For example,

You should not be harsh with Anna as she is very sensitive.

The sentence suggests that Anna is easily affected by the actions of others. It, however, does not have to be actions only, if a person is affected by what others say, how others treat him/her and feels upset, such an individual is sensitive.

This adjective can be used to denote that something is easily affected by slight changes. For example,

She has a very sensitive skin that gets bruised easily.

In the above example, sensitive is an adjective that describes the skin, which is easily affected.

When referring to secret or controversial topics also this word can be used. For example,

Data collection of the research was extremely difficult since it was a very sensitive subject.

If certain information is controversial or very personal, this word can be used. Here in the example the word suggests that since the research theme explored sensitive data, the data gathering stage was difficult.

This highlights that the adjective sensitive can be used in a range of situations, in each case denoting a different meaning. However, we have to be careful not to confuse the word with sensible.

Are you practical or thin skinned?

The adjectives «sensible» and «sensitive» evolved from the Latin sēnsus, which means «the faculty of perceiving,» according to the American Heritage Dictionary. It may be surprising, therefore, that in today’s world, they have completely different meanings. Whereas «sensible» means practical or levelheaded, «sensitive» means reactive or extremely aware. An archaic meaning of «sensible,» however, is much closer to the contemporary meaning of «sensitive.»

How to Use «Sensitive»

The most common definitions of the adjective «sensitive» are: easily hurt or offended, highly perceptive, quick to respond to slight changes or differences, and concerned with secret or delicate matters. A person can also be «sensitive to» heat, cold, certain foods, or even emotions, for example.

While all of these definitions refer to the human quality of being sensitive, it is also possible for other animals, plants, processes, and events to be sensitive. For example, a «sensitive test for cancer» can discover cancer cells even if there are very few or they are difficult to detect. A «sensitive situation» can describe an interaction that has the potential to become explosive.

In rarer situations, the word «sensitive» is also used as a noun. When that’s the case, it means a person who is likely to sense the presence of spirit influences. Sometimes a «sensitive» is believed to have access to the spirits of the dead; they may also be sensitive to the presence of angels or other spiritual entities.

How to Use «Sensible»

The most common definitions of the adjective «sensible» are: practical, reasonable, and having (or showing) good sense or sound judgment. Although the term «sensible» is usually positive when applied to an individual, it can also have negative connotations when the «sensible» choice is compared to the creative, exciting, or adventurous choice. For example, «Bob made the ‘sensible’ choice and became an accountant instead of joining the Peace Corps.»

When applied to objects rather than people, «sensible» items are often considered to be practical but unfashionable or uninteresting. «Sensible shoes,» for example, are intended for comfort rather than good looks, and a «sensible dress» is usually inexpensive, easy to care for, and utterly unfashionable.

An archaic meaning of «sensible» is aware of; this usage was still common during the first part of the 20th century. Often, the term was used to describe the awareness of something intangible; for example, «Elizabeth was ‘sensible’ of her many flaws.»

Examples

The following examples use the word «sensible» in all its senses. In the first sentence, the word is used to mean reasonable and appropriate. In the second, it is used to mean showing good judgment. In the last sentence, «sensible» is used in the archaic sense to mean aware of.

In the first three sentences below, «sensitive» is used as an adjective to describe highly reactive or volatile. In the last sentence, it is used as a noun to describe a person with strong occult abilities.

How to Remember the Difference

Remember that the word «sensitive» is used much more often than «sensible,» and you are likely to hear it used to negatively describe someone who overreacts to ordinary situations. For example, «He’s so ‘sensitive’ that he takes offense at every little thing.» «The word «sensible,» on the other hand, ends with the sound of «able,» so remember that a sensible person is able to make smart decisions and judgments.

«Sense and Sensibility»

The novel «Sense and Sensibility,» ​by Jane Austen, uses forms of the words «sensitive» and «sensible» in the title—but the use of the word «sensibility» in this context is archaic. The novel tells the story of two sisters, one of whom is reasonable and levelheaded («sense») and the other of whom is highly emotional («sensibility»). In Austen’s time, the term «sensibility» described a person (usually a woman) who reacted almost entirely based on emotions. This was considered romantic at the time, but, of course, often led to making poor decisions.
